Kat Norton: The Dancing Excel Sheet

Making excel sheets fun is no joke. Not only did Kat do that, but she also became a media icon in the process. I break down what she did and what we can do to do the same. Specialty: Reels & TikTok.

Kat Norton

Who is Kat Norton?

Dancing is one of the most fun activities ever. Excel sheets make me want to cry at night. So what did Kat do? She danced to explain excel sheets!

After studying business administration for years, she had a huge talent for using different Microsoft office applications. In addition, she has passion for teaching and helping others.

After posting about excel through fun dance videos, she rapidly became a trustworthy and entertaining source of information. Leading her to start hosting classes and consulting for using Microsoft suites.

Doing this helped her generated over about 2 million dollars year over year as a social media icon - Miss Excel.

Kat Norton’s Blueprint (1/3)

Target Audience

One thing that I know for a fact after being in university for a year is that almost every student is interested in excel. In fact, there are actually required classes for some schools that specifically just go through how to use excel.

You may think, business = linkedin, so she must attack X or Instagram. But that’s not where her people were when she started. The majority of young adults were on TikTok when she launched (2020). So she chose people actually in the process of learning it. Approximate age range: 16 - 25.

The golden people:

  • A 16-year-old preparing for college by getting a head start on learning important business necessities

  • A 19-year-old preparing for recruiting season during the summer

  • A 25-year-old founder looking to understand an important feature to keep their files organized

Engagement Tactics

I am very excited to talk about Kat’s engagement tactics. Why? Because she did one thing that will never fail. Putting. Yourself. Out. There. It takes serious guts to stand in front of a camera for 10-30 seconds and just dance. Well that’s exactly what Kat Norton does to make excel sheets become entertaining.

Yes, that is an incredible tactic that can draw in viewers for all sorts of reasons. The dancing is called ‘video anchoring.’ The idea is to give a soft, satisfying feeling to stimulate the brain while deploying meaningful information.

For example, creators will often include subway surfers at the bottom of their videos to stimulate the brain of the viewers while presenting dialogues.

In addition, Kat has animations of excel sheets above her, so the audience doesn’t have to self-visualize. They actually see what she is talking about in real time — making her content much more enjoyable.

Since 16-25 year olds have lower attention spans, these visual anchoring techniques are extremely important.

Exercise (2/3)

You love coding. Specifically, you love the language Python in which you do all your development in. As we all know, coding can be one of the most daunting and boring tasks for everyone. Yet, it is extremely important for software developers. Can you figure out how to captivate that audience?

  1. Whose your target audience? (age range + specifics)

  2. How can you show coding throughout your videos?

  3. What is a way to visually anchor your audience?

My answers:

  • People looking to code are generally entering college or just graduating. For that reason, my age range is 18-24. My target audience are students who are looking for coding tips to do better in school or outside projects.

  • You NEED to show actual typing in your videos so people can see what each character and line looks like. Especially since coding is so intricate. So to accomplish this, I would show a screen zoomed representing my code.

  • One thing that people love to hear is typing. I would include me typing everything heightened sound on each click of the keyboard. So peoples ear can be satisfied while seeing informational content.

You could also spit screen to show your face

Final Takeaways (3/3)

  1. Visual Anchoring is a MUST have in 2025. No matter what the content you produce, if your target audience is young, this is a non-negotiable.

  2. If you are producing informational content, I urge you to show visuals of it. Whether it be an animation or screen recording.
